Jorge Caballero

Audiovisual Filmmaker, Producer and Researcher

Trained in telecommunications engineering and audiovisual communication, with a master's degree in interactive media, he furthered his academic career with a doctorate in film and artificial intelligence. A prominent lecturer at Pompeu Fabra University and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Caballero is recognized for leading international workshops at the intersection of technology, film and social impact. As co-founder of GusanoFilms and Artefacto, his work has received international acclaim at festivals such as HotDocs, SXSW and DocNYC, with the backing of the Sundance Institute and the Tribeca Film Institute.

His films, made in collaboration with prestigious broadcasters such as ARTE, Discovery Channel and TV3, have twice won the national documentary award in Colombia. In his academic career, Caballero researches the social impact of film, including virtual reality projects with the UN on the peace process in Colombia and studies on the capacity of film to foster pro-social behavioral changes. His interest in merging artificial intelligence with documentary filmmaking has led him to lead a graduate program in Film Algorithms and AI at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, promoting the integration of advanced technologies in narrative creation. Caballero is about to publish a pioneering book on artificial imagination.

A jury member at several international film festivals and part of the IDFA Bertha Fund selection committee, Caballero's multifaceted contributions span both filmmaking and academic research, reflecting a deep commitment to the use of technology to expand the narrative possibilities of cinema. His work, recognized by Variety magazine as one of the outstanding emerging talents, challenges the boundaries of traditional filmmaking, ensuring inclusivity and innovation. Together with Runway, he develops "OpenDocs," a program to provide production support and creative AI tools to documentary filmmakers from diverse communities and regions.
