Master in motion graphics design

The audio-visual creator needs in a way indispensable to know and to dominate the tools that allow him to represent his ideas. Tools with which to realize projects capable of catching the attention of the spectator. Tools with which to construct memorable messages.

Composite master

The Master's in Motion Graphics Design of 60 ECTS is obtained by completing the two postgraduate degrees of 30 ECTS each. Postgraduate degree in Motion Design

Module I -Technology (After Effects and Final Cut/Digital compositing and editing tools)

This module will lay the theoretical and practical groundwork, working in-depth with editing and compositing tools for digital images and audio.

Students will be trained to use and master these tools as a support for developing audiovisual narratives. Students will improve their knowledge and abilities when using audiovisual design tools for compositing and editing such as After Effects and Final Cut.

  • Basis for operating audiovisual editing and composition tools.
  • Capturing, editing and exporting video and audio in digital formats.
  • Compositing and animating texts, vector graphics, images and visual effects.
  • Integrating image and sound.
  • Solving technical issues in the process of audiovisual production and editing.
  • Improving skills for using audiovisual editing and compositing tools.

Module II - Metaphor-Credits workshop

The main goal of this workshop is to learn about and use metaphors as narrative resources, analysing different styles and learning to use and master metaphors using exercises, from the narrative ideas (including storyboards) to the animation stage.

This includes two theoretical sessions about the main references in film credits, which pioneered motion graphics.

  • To expand upon knowledge about metaphors as a narrative resource in art and communications history.
  • To expand upon knowledge about the main references and credit makers in film history.
  • To analyse and understand the principles of metaphors in audiovisual narratives, specifically for film, TV and new-media.
  • To choose and apply models and references for metaphorical figures to audiovisual productions.

Furthermore, this practical module will develop skills for analysing references and theoretical aspects:

  • From paper to the screen. From the Avant-garde to Bass.
  • Credits: halfway between ignorance and glory.
  • Credits: production, design and execution.
  • Art and Narrative resources. Metaphors and Visual tricks.
  • The storyboard. Framing and selection of shots.
  • Animatic. Synching the image from the audio.

Module III – Audio workshop

The main goal of this workshop is to get to grips with the basics of producing audio in an audiovisual context (music editing and effects) and to analyse different periods and styles by looking at relevant examples from films, advertisements and new-media.

  • To identify the basic structures of audio in the audiovisual language.
  • To work from a creative perspective using the various techniques specific to audio in the audiovisual language.
  • To understand the multiple styles of audio in the audiovisual language.
  • To investigate and experiment with sound languages.
  • To analyse and synthesise concepts for expressing and communicating with audio.
  • To use and adjust sound and image in accordance with desired result to get across.
  • Introduction to sound and its meaning:
    • What sound is and how it is expressed in space-time.
    • Prosody of music and image (emotions).
    • Re-mastering audio in a motion piece.
    • Creating an original piece from a sound universe.
  • Editing:
    • Dynamic treatments from intensity, time, timbre, height and reverberation.
    • Gesture treatment: articulation and phrasing between image and sound.
  • Exercise:
    • Selecting the project.
    • Consistency in the “dramatic” discourse.
    • Review of the dynamic domains (filters, reverb, articulations).
    • Consistency of results.
    • Aesthetical justification based on the proposed idea.

Module IV - Projects (audiovisual narrative)

This module is a space for creation and production where audiovisual narrative projects are carried out for new-media screens.

  • To identify the basic structures of audiovisual language.
  • To work from a creative perspective using the various techniques specific to the audiovisual language.
  • To understand the multiple audio styles in an audiovisual narrative.
  • To investigate and experiment with audiovisual languages and tools.
  • To analyse and synthesise expression and communication concepts.
  • To develop awareness of the relevance of concept as the driving element of the project.
  • To acquire a working methodology specific to this discipline.
  • To bring together technical skills and creativity.
  • To develop your own style.
  • To analyse the degree of visibility of the projects.
  • To get to grips with the specific language used in design and visual communication.
  • To get to grips with elements of visual perception and image culture.

Module V – Audiovisual Culture

This module analyses the main references of audiovisual culture; from the general precedents in the history of contemporary art to specific disciplines like film, TV and new media, by analysing the different styles and trends to anticipate their application in the execution of projects.

  • To understand and analyse the main references in film, TV, internet and all other new media.
  • To understand and analyse the principles of audiovisual narrative specific to film, TV and new media.
  • To develop the required skillset for selecting and applying models and references from film, TV and new media to audiovisual productions.
  • The audiovisual language. Space and time on the screen.
  • Montage as a narrative resource and pace in editing.
  • Space and time in art and contemporary design. From avant-garde to the latest trends.
  • Narrative techniques. Writing with images. Style exercises.

 

Postgraduate degree in Motion 3D

Module I – Technologies (Cinema 4D / Modelling and 3D animation tool)

This module is a space for theory and practice, where students will work intensely with modelling and 3D animation tools while also using image and digital audio editing and composition tools. They will be trained to use and master these tools to support their construction of an audiovisual narrative.

They will acquire the knowledge and skills that are required to work with the modelling and 3D animation tool, Cinema 4D, while furthering their skills in using, composing and editing animated graphical audiovisual pieces.

  • Basic usage of modelling and 3D animation tools.

Module II – Animation Workshop

Taking the analysis of the basic concepts of animation as a starting point, the main goal of this workshop is to work on the creation and development of a Stop Motion Animation piece that will allow the students to develop an awareness of space and light when working in 3D and also of the basics of animation.

  • To analyse and understand the basic principles of animation.
  • To understand and analyse some of the main references for Stop Motion Animation.
  • To select and apply models and references from animation to audiovisual productions.

This module is fundamentally practical, but to support the execution of the exercise we will be analysing references and the basic principles of Stop Motion Animation.

Module III – TV Abstraction Workshop

Taking the analysis of the basic concepts of audiovisual design, and identity and promotion in TV as a reference, the main goal of this workshop is to work on building and developing a brand, the use of metaphorical discourse and abstraction as a resource for formal representation, beyond text and typography.

  • To acquire further knowledge of the main references of identity and promotion in TV.
  • To analyse and understand the principles of audiovisual design in TV.
  • To select and apply models and references for identity and promotion in TV to audiovisual productions.
  • This module is fundamentally practical, but to support the execution of the exercise we will analyse references and the following theoretical content: audiovisual design as a tangible manifestation of TV branding.

Module IV – Screen typography workshop

The principal objectives of this workshop are to develop an understanding of the main references of typography, analyse various periods and styles through the work of relevant authors and understand the primary differences between paper and screen as supports for application, and the features and limitations specific to the latter medium.

  • To apply typography as an expressive and/or functional tool in an audiovisual context.
  • To develop the required skillset for the composition and animation of on-screen typography.
  • To develop a comparative understanding of the rules of fixed typography and animated typography.
  • To learn about the features and limitations specific to on-screen typography.
  • To learn about the communication capabilities of typography in an audiovisual context.

Module V – Camera / lighting workshop

The main purpose of this workshop is to provide an understanding of the basics of film language (from shot to sequence), the basic principles of lighting and the operation of video cameras.

  • To learn about basic operation and acquire further knowledge of the use of professional video cameras.
  • To learn about basic operation and acquire further knowledge of the use of basic lighting materials on a set.
  • To solve technical issues that arise when filming with a professional video camera.
